Douglas William O. Douglas In his life, William O. Douglas served as a member of the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Senator, Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, President of the University of Chicago, and chancellor of the University of Chicago. William O. Douglas was born in Davenport, Iowa on September 12, 1898. His family moved to Wisconsin when he was a child, and he earned a B.A. from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1917. He received an LL.B. from University of Wisconsin Law School in 1922, and then began teaching law at Wisconsin. He left Wisconsin to accept a position at the University of Chicago in 1924, and stayed there until his death. In 1928, Douglas married Isabel McLean, and they had two daughters. He served as president of the University of Chicago between 1940 and 1944. He was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1944 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and he was confirmed in 1945. During his time on the Court, he authored many opinions on Supreme Court cases, particularly about the First Amendment and the bill of attainder clause. In 1950, he was re-nominated to the Court and, in 1952, was confirmed by the Senate. In 1960, President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed Douglas to the U.S. Senate. He served until his death in 1972, and is buried in Valhalla, New York. Douglas was awarded numerous honors and awards over his lifetime. He received the Great Books Award in 1960, the A.E. Lipsett Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Study of American Freedom in 1961, the Award of Merit from the Society for the Advancement of American Letters in 1965, the Louis Brandeis Award from the American Bar Association in 1967, the Centennial Award from the University of Wisconsin in 1968, the J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Prize for Physics in 1969, the Gold Medal from the American Academy of Political and Social Science in 1970, and the
